What's the most ordinary thing in your day that a visitor would find strange?
How this works
Press the button and you get a question from a hand-written list. Each one is short, easy to translate and open enough that the answer is more than a single word. You can filter by mood: light ones for the first minute, deeper ones once the chat is warm, playful ones when you both need a laugh.
Getting more out of a question
Answer it yourself before you send it, or right after. A question with nothing offered in return feels like an interview. A question with your own answer next to it feels like a trade.
Keep your sentence short if the other person is writing in their second language. Skip idioms and sarcasm, because they are the first things to break in translation.
And follow up on one detail. If they say they are drinking tea at midnight, ask what kind. That second question is where conversations actually start.
Want more than one question?
We wrote a longer guide with 50 questions to ask someone from another country, grouped by how well you know the person and what kind of conversation you want.
